Weave - Learning Assessment Tool

product designer & Manager, 2022

Weave builds higher education assessment and accreditation software. Comprised of educators, administrators, and technologists, Weave is dedicated to simplifying the management of institutional effectiveness.

Design Challenge:

Weave has traditionally focused on accreditation and institutional level assessment and has not provided support for program leaders and faculty who must do the heavy lifting of generating, organizing and analyzing student learning data.

We want to change that and make the work of programs and faculty easier to free them up to focus on the important work of providing interventions and student support.

Goal:

• To easily generate student learning data so that we can better understand learning progress.

• To understand student learning progress and review it at a glance so that we can improve student outcomes.

To solve that problem we designed a tool that:

• Self-generates data by evaluating and grading student performance

• Visualizes the data

• Provides analytics that scale from assignment to institution level

• Offers meaningful layers of analysis

Faculty are able to create assignments and evaluate student work directly in the program.

Inspiration for this project came from the 1977 Charles and Ray Eames film, Powers Of Ten. Powers Of Ten depicts the relative scale of the Universe according to a view based on a factor of ten, expanding out from the Earth until the entire universe is surveyed, then reducing inward until a single atom and its quarks are observed. I was inspired by the challenge to scale data in a similar way, reducing inward from an entire institution down to an individual student student and back again.

Users are able to view performance via selected learning goals at levels ranging from Institution, School, Program, Student and Assignment.

Nuanced analysis is available by viewing the specific Outcomes related to each Learning Goal.
